Lilian Steiner
Lilian Steiner is an Australian dancer and choreographer. Her practice champions the deep intelligence of the body and its unique ability to reveal and comment on the complexities of contemporary humanity. Her interests extend into experimental sound and visual design practices where the body is the base for questioning and expression.
After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts, Bachelor of Dance program in 2010, Lilian worked in Australia as a major performer/collaborator and toured extensively with Australian company, Lucy Guerin Inc., and occupied the role of Resident Director with the company in 2021-22. She also worked on multiple projects with renown international choreographers as well as with numerous artists working with live performance and film in the fields of visual arts, experimental sound and architecture/design. Since 2023, Lilian has been working with renowned Stockholm-based dance company, Cullberg, where she has performed works by Alexandra Bachzetsis, Hooman Sharifi, Alma Söderberg and Halla Ólafsdóttir.
Lilian’s own choreographic work has been presented within Australia and internationally. Australian presentations include, amongst others, Dancehouse Melbourne, Dance Massive, Sydney Dance Company’s New Breed program, Next Wave Festival. International presentations include at Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine-Saint-Denis and Les Plateaux de la Briqueterie (Paris), B.Motion Danza (Bassano del Grappa), Homo Novus Festival (Riga), Deltebre Dansa (Deltebre), STHLM DANS (Stockholm), Fête de la Musique (Geneva), Festival Constellations (Toulon), Sounds and Visions Festival ( London) & Hong Kong International Choreography Festival (Hong Kong).
Lilian received the Australian Green Room Award for Best Performer in 2023, and Best Female Dancer in both 2017 and 2018, as well as the Helpmann Award in 2017. Her work Noise Quartet Meditation received the 2015 Green Room Award for Concept and Realisation.
